Dad once made the family move towns in the middle of the night while packing everything into the family car, a process he called “doing the skedaddle.” The Wallses repeatedly skedaddle throughout the ensuing years, relocating all over the place to avoid being caught by debt collectors and law authorities. They stay in bigger places for a month or two, such as San Francisco and Las Vegas, so that Dad may gamble his way to quick cash. However, the Wallses spend most of their time in remote mining communities in the desert, where Mom and Dad instruct their kids in reading, math, and specialized survival skills. Dad struggles to hold onto a job for very long and frequently consumes alcohol, but he assures his family that their wandering lifestyle is just temporary. He pledges to find gold and to erect for his family the Glass Castle, a huge glass structure that can support itself. The Glass Castle quiz will help you remember certain details.

Characters:

Jeannette Walls

the memoir’s main character and narrator. Jeannette is a bright, aspirational, and resourceful young girl who does everything in her power to make things better for her family and live. She was her father’s favorite child for the majority of her childhood since she supported and believed in him. She exploits the independence her parents instilled in her to carve out a life for herself as the story goes on and she comes to the realization that her parents don’t have her best interests at heart.

Dad (Rex Walls)

Father of Jeannette, a charismatic yet careless man. Dad enjoys bragging about his own successes and positioning himself as superior to others. But he also beats up on Mom physically and won’t keep a steady job. His drinking and irresponsibility increasingly put his family in danger of poverty and harm as the narrative goes on. Later, we discover that he experienced sexual abuse as a child and had a challenging childhood.

Mom (Rose Mary Walls)

Mother of Jeannette, an enthusiastic artist and self-described “excitement addict.” She has mixed feelings about doing things around the house like cleaning, cooking, and raising kids. She frequently exhorts the kids to show compassion to people who have wronged them, but she defines compassion as having no boundaries.

Lori Walls

The mature older sister of Jeannette, who began to question her parents’ parenting style at a young age. Lori is a quick-witted person who is noted for her snarky remarks. She inherited her mother’s love of art, but she wants to live a more traditional life apart from her family. She is the first Walls child to move to New York City and leave the family.
