Local school districts, law enforcement release statements following recent social media threats (1)

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Several school districts and law enforcement across the Big Bend and South Georgia have released statements after being aware of social media threats concerning schools in the past few days.

Some local school districts have been made aware of a list of Title 1 schools on the Georgia Department of Education’s website that appear to have been targeted with social media threats.

Within the past week, a slew of arrests have been made following local school threats:

Hamilton County high school student arrested Wednesday in connection to social media threat
13-year-old arrested after shooting threat at C.A. Gray Junior High School, another threat made Tuesday night
Two Rickards High students arrested at Leon High, one in possession of stun gun

Wakulla County Schools - Wednesday, Sept. 11

Increased law enforcement will be present at all Wakulla County Schools Wednesday due to possible threats made Tuesday, according to the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office.

The WCSO said they immediately began looking into the threats, but so far they haven’t found any to be credible.

Hamilton County Schools - Wednesday, Sept. 11

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that a high school student was arrested in connection to a social media post shared Tuesday which Hamilton County High School said included comments referring to five students as a target.

There was no substance or believability to the threat, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies believe the names in the threat are fictitious and that one of the names in the threat was the name of the suspect.

The student faces a charge of making a threat in writing or electronically, per HCSO.

Leon County Schools - Tuesday, Sept. 10

Tuesday night, Rickards High School sent a message to parents saying there have been no verified threats to Leon County Schools.

However, out of caution, law enforcement will be present on some of the campuses.

Taylor County Schools - Tuesday, Sept. 10

On Wednesday, the Taylor County School District announced that they are working with the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office to address recent threats circulating on social media.

At this time, the school district said the threats are unsubstantiated and appear to have originated in Georgia.

However, students are asked to not bring backpacks or large bags to school for the remainder of the week.

Miller County Schools - Wednesday, Sept. 11

All Miller County Schools closed early Wednesday morning following a bomb threat made to the campuses. According to the school district, they were informed of a threat made to its campus on Facebook Messenger a little before 6 a.m.

An unknown account sent a message to one of the Miller County school system’s Facebook accounts, detailing a bomb threat to the campus, according to the school district.

JV softball has also been canceled for Wednesday, according to the school district.

Students and staff are expected to return to campus Thursday.

Decatur County Schools - Wednesday, Sept. 11

Wednesday morning, Hutto Elementary School was placed under what Decatur County Schools call a Level 1 lockdown.

The elementary school resumed normal operations a little after 9 a.m., according to the school district.

On Monday, the district announced that its schools implemented a Level 1 lockdown due to a social media threat impacting “a wide area of school systems in our region.”

Colquitt County Schools - Tuesday, Sept. 10

The Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office announced a 13-year-old student was arrested Tuesday after making threats to CA Gray Junior High School just after 12 p.m.

Additionally, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday night that there will be additional law enforcement presence at all of the schools Wednesday, more specifically at CA Gray Junior High after being made aware of a second threat made to the high school.

Thomas County Schools - Tuesday, Sept. 10

Thomas County Schools announced Tuesday that they are aware of a social media post involving its schools. An investigation revealed that the post was deemed not credible.

Additionally, the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office released a statement Tuesday saying there was no credible threat to any of the Thomas County Schools.

Brooks County Schools - Tuesday, Sept. 10

Brooks County Schools announced the following statement:

Echols County Schools - Tuesday, Sept. 10

Echols County High School released a statement Tuesday saying they and the Echols County Sheriff’s Office are both aware of a list of Title 1 schools being shared across social media.
